Seattle Mariners

There's still no indication on how much of a splash the Seattle Mariners might make in the offseason. Team owner/chairman John Stanton has already said the team won't be big spenders in free agency. One free agent the club is rumored to have interest in wouldn't cost a lot of money, but his ripple effect could still have negative effects in Seattle. Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki is expected to be posted for the 2025 signing period by Nippon Professional Baseball's Chiba Lotte Marines.

The Seattle Mariners offense last season was the biggest weakness of the team and the main reason the club missed out on the playoffs for the 22nd time in 23 years. The Mariners struck out more than any team in the majors (1,625) and were at one point on pace to set the major league record in that category. Julio Rodriguez, JP Crawford, Jorge Polanco, Mitch Garver, Victor Robles and Cal Raleigh all either missed time or were banged up for portions of the season. The offense did pick up when hitting coach Edgar Martinez and manager Dan Wilson were hired on Aug. 22.

The MLB offseason is in full swing, and the Boston Red Sox are in the thick of it. While it is common knowledge that insiders think he will be traded to the Chicago White Sox in a deal for pitcher Garrett Crochet, MLB insider Jon Morosi thinks there's another good destination: the Seattle Mariners.

How you consume Seattle Mariners baseball could look very different in 2025. As part of a lengthy piece in 'The Athletic' on Tuesday that talked about the future of baseball's television deals, it was reported that the M's (kind of) now fall into the category of teams that will have their games produced by Major League Baseball. The Seattle Mariners are partly in MLB's in-house broadcasting group, which is up to... 7.5 teams? “It's just complicated because they have distribution agreements that ran longer,” Manfred said.

The Seattle Mariners, who had a disappointing 2024 season after missing the postseason, were one of the worst offensive teams in baseball. The Mariners made a trade for Austin Shenton from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations, the Mariners announced on Tuesday. This is a reunion of sorts, with Shenton having spent the first three years of his professional career in the Mariners organization. Once Shenton reached Double-A with the Mariners during the 2021 season, he was traded to the Rays.

The annual MLB Hall of Fame ballot was announced on Monday with 14 newcomers and 14 holdovers earning a spot on the ballot. Ichiro Suzuki headlines the star-studded class of newcomers, while Billy Wagner is the lone player in his tenth and final year on the ballot. Wagner finished just five votes shy of the 75 percent threshold required to be inducted into Cooperstown, finishing with 73.8%. With the steroid era and the Astros cheating scandal still prevalent amongst players on the ballot, voters will have to make a choice in the age-old debate about the Hall of Fame's “character clause”.

Last week, Seattle Sports' Mike Salk laid out his case for making the move, a move he conceded wouldn't be easy, stating that even writing the words made his skin crawl. Salk: It's time for the Mariners to trade a pitcher – but which one? Knowing the situation the Mariners are currently in while acknowledging the value of starting pitching, Salk comes to the conclusion that having five top starters is cool but unnecessary, and that the offensive boost of the return player would be worth the falloff in starting performance. Emerson Hancock should be ready to be near a league-average starter.

Per a report from MLB insider Mark Feinsand, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez was the lone player who accepted the uniform one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer extended to him. Among those players is Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. The three-time Gold Glove winner is officially on the open market for the first time since he originally signed with the Diamondbacks back in the pre-2017 offseason.

A possible Seattle Mariners target will officially be hitting the free agent market. First baseman and four-time All-Star Pete Alonso declined his one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets on Monday, making him available to sign with any team he chooses. Alonso is arguably the best infielder available on the market, at least from an offensive standpoint. The former Florida Gator has played six season for the Mets.

The Houston Astros have some questions to answer following their loss in the American League Wild Card Series to the suddenly resurgent Detroit Tigers. Star third baseman and two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman is now a free agent and there are no guarantees he will return to the Astros. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com listed several potential landing spots for the 30-year-old, and among them were the Astros' AL West rivals, the Seattle Mariners.
