With Spencer Strider sidelined for the season following elbow surgery, Max Fried has stepped back into the role of the ace of the Atlanta Braves. Fried is scheduled to start Monday night as the Braves open a three-game interleague series against the host Seattle Mariners. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in three starts since Strider's surgery, including a three-hit shutout over the Miami Marlins in a 5-0 win last Tuesday.

We’ve now seen that this is a team that should win games if they’re able to score four or more runs with quality pitching starts. That’s the blueprint – one the Mariners expected and promoted this offseason.

If there is an acceptable loss for this Mariners team — a defeat that does not cause distress — it came against the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Arizona came away with a 3-2 victory, dropping the first-place Mariners' record to 15-13 in the process.

A decade ago, Scott Servais was working in the Los Angeles Angels front office when the club signed an undersized infielder from Venezuela. Today, as a 26-year-old with nine seasons of minor-league experience, Leo Rivas is listed at 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds. “I remember having a lot of questions [for] our scouts,” Servais said. Rivas, now with his third organization, got his first big-league call up Friday, and was in the starting lineup for the first time Sunday for the Mariners' series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Corbin Carroll was undoubtedly hoping a homecoming would help him break out of his sophomore slump. The Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder, who was a unanimous selection as the National League's Rookie of the Year last season, was hitless in a 3-1 loss at streaking Seattle on Saturday night as his batting average fell below .200. Manager Torey Lovullo dropped Carroll, who normally bats second in the Diamondbacks' order, into the No. 8 spot Saturday for the first time since his initial September 2022 call-up to the major leagues. Carroll had more than 80 friends and family members in the stands for his first regular-season appearance in his hometown Friday.

Leadoff-hitting shortstop J.P. Crawford was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday because of a right oblique strain. The move came a day after Crawford was a late scratch from the Mariners' lineup before their 5-1 loss at Texas. “I do not have a timeline for J.P. We’ll evaluate it as it goes along,” manager Scott Servais said.

Adolis García and Evan Carter hit Texas’ first back-to-back home runs this season and the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1 on Wednesday night. García’s team-high seventh homer in the fourth inning barely cleared the wall in straight-away center field and tipped off the glove of Julio Rodríguez. García stood near first base apparently thinking Rodríguez made the catch until he saw the center fielder walk toward the infield, turn and look over the fence.

Texas shortstop Corey Seager left the Rangers’ game against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night following the seventh inning because of a left shin contusion after being hit by a pitch in the inning. The 2023 World Series MVP was struck on the back leg by an 0-2 pitch from reliever Austin Voth that bounced in the dirt in front of the plate. Seager was attended to by the medical staff after taking first base and remained in the game for the rest of the inning.
