Texas Rangers

Virtually everything the Texas Rangers did this season can be rooted back to injuries. The majority of the rotation missed time with injuries, and most of them were actually doing really well before hitting the IL. Josh Jung's season began so happily, with a cheerful mic-ing up on ESPN during one of the first games of the season. The Rangers' 3rd baseman had such a great 2023 three that all eyes were on him for a satisfying follow-up.

The Texas Rangers spent more money on talent in 2024 than any other team that did not make the postseason. According to a report from ESPN Friday, citing a memo to MLB clubs from the league office that it had obtained, the Rangers' Competitive Balance Tax payroll figure of $268,445,491 was the fifth highest payroll in baseball. The teams with higher payrolls - the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Mets and the Atlanta Braves - all reached the postseason. It was the second straight season in which the Rangers eclipsed the CBT threshold, which sat at $237 million in 2024.

The Milwaukee Brewers have a lot of talent and should be able to compete for the top spot in the National League Central again. Milwaukee won 93 games last year, and although it has lost some important pieces, it still is loaded with exciting, young talent. The Brewers likely won't give out a massive deal this offseason, but that doesn't mean that they can't add some talent themselves. If the Brewers want to add a key piece, it could make sense to add another starting pitcher and Max Scherzer could be that guy.

The 2024 season could not have gone any worse for the Texas Rangers; their offense fell off considerably, and their pitching wasn't able to compensate for this steep dip in hitting production. Milner's contract with the Rangers is for one year, as per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, although financial terms haven't been disclosed as of yet. This will be a homecoming for the 33-year-old lefty, as he is a Dallas native who went to the University of Texas.

MLB All-Star and 2024 batting champion Bobby Witt Jr. may live in Kansas City currently, but that doesn't mean his D-FW roots aren't on display from time to time. The Colleyville Heritage graduate and current Royals shortstop married Maggie Black, whom he went to high school with in Colleyville, this past week. Witt and his wife grew up in the Dallas area, so they both showed off their admiration for the Texas-founded fast food restaurant chain Whataburger.

The St. Louis Cardinals are more worried about shedding payroll this winter than having a competitive roster to showcase come Opening Day 2025. Trading away significant talent isn't out of the question for the Cardinals, as the front office plans to make room for younger talent to gain experience next season. "Both Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported earlier this offseason that—despite St. Louis' stated plan of getting younger and building toward the future—the Cardinals are not expected to trade away closer Ryan Helsley unless they get an offer they simply cannot refuse.," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote Thursday morning.

To assess the market of free-agent Texas Rangers closer Kirby Yates, one has to do some research. Yates is one of the top closers on the market, even at 37 years old. Lately, focus has been on the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, teams also looking for closer help in 2025. The Tigers — who went on an amazing second-half run to make the playoffs and win their American League Wild Card series — were recently linked to Yates, per KPRC in Houston.
