Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins officially revealed 24 non-roster invitees to their major league Spring Training camp on Monday, one of whom was outfielder Albert Almora Jr. There was not a previously-announced minor league contract between Almora and Miami, so it remains to be seen when exactly the deal was agreed upon. Regardless, Almora will be joining the Marlins for Grapefruit League action in February, fighting tooth and nail for an MLB roster spot.

Just two off-seasons ago, the A's made a surprise trade by sending off their former No. 2 prospect, A.J. Puk, to the Miami Marlins. In exchange, the A's received Miami's No. 2 prospect and former Vanderbilt star, JJ Bleday. It was truly shocking to see the A's deal away Puk after a season where he was a big part of the team's bullpen. In 66 innings for the A's in 2022, Puk posted a 3.12 ERA, where he struck out 76 batters and only walked 23.

The St. Louis Cardinals have had a quiet offseason. For all the talk of a "reset", it has become clear that St. Louis' plans were merely to shed payroll. This means that there may not be any free agent additions from the outside and that the Cardinals will instead go with what they currently have. For a brief stretch in 2024, Tommy Pham was back with St. Louis.

The Washington Nationals were near the bottom of the MLB during the 2024 season with only 73 wins. Only five teams were victorious fewer times than them; the Miami Marlins, Colorado Rockies, Athletics, Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox. Despite that, they were one of the teams many people were keeping a close eye on coming into the offseason because there were whispers of them being ready to spend. The Nationals handed out only one multi-year contract this offseason to pitcher Trevor Williams, who re-signed with the club on a two-year, $14 million deal.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Where to begin with Ichiro Suzuki? With how he’d appropriate his daily lunch of chicken wings from seven to five pieces, or vice versa, as needed to weigh 172 pounds? How he’d put his ear to his bat and tap it with his finger for a harmonic sound only he heard to decide it was worthy? Or, since he was in Cooperstown Wednesday as a newly elected Hall of Famer, the ...

Back in November, the Athletics made a waiver claim, bringing in right-hander Anthony Maldonado from the Miami Marlins. The way Maldonado tells it, the A's were surprised that he ended up on the waiver wire at all. This was at the beginning of the off-season, before the A's went on a bit of a spending spree and the roster composition changed a little bit, but Maldonado certainly has the tools to be a successful big league relief pitcher in the green and gold. While his fastball averaged 93 miles per hour with the Marlins, which is below league average these days, he did a great job of limiting hard contact with an 85.3 mile per hour average exit velocity, as well as a 31.9% chase rate and a 28.7% whiff rate, all of which were well above league average in a small sample.

The Los Angeles Angels have made a surprise signing on Wednesday, adding two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson to a minor league deal, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Last year, with the Miami Marlins, Anderson slashed an even worse .214/.237/.226 with zero home runs and an OPS of .463 in 65 games.

Have the Philadelphia Phillies made their only big trade with the Miami Marlins this offseason? Just before the holiday season, Philadelphia brought in ex-Miami starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo for a pair of top prospects. It was a much-needed boost to the Phillies rotation, but with a month to go before Spring Training, there are still other needs to address. The Phillies outfield was short on power in 2024, lagging far behind the rest of the roster.

As usual, the Miami Marlins enter 2025 in the midst of yet another rebuild. One of the consistently worst teams in Major League Baseball — in spite of winning two World Series titles — since its inception in 1993, the Marlins will once again begin this season with a roster chock-full of relative unknowns. A brief glimmer of success in 2023 was stamped out by another morose 2024 in Miami, as the team shipped out all of its star talent to load up on prospects again. The team's starting staff, once the envy of much of MLB, has been decimated.

With the international signing period kicking off on Jan. 15, the San Francisco Giants made some headlines when they officially landed one of the best prospects of this cycle on a $3 million deal. While they would have loved to sign Roki Sasaki, getting the elite switch-hitting batter and high-ceiling defender, Josuar Gonzalez, into the organization is a huge win. First, they shipped out a promising catcher to the Boston Red Sox. Then, in an announcement made by the Miami Marlins, it was revealed they had acquired San Francisco's former third-round pick, William Kempner, in a trade that involved sending international bonus pool money back for the pitcher.

The Seattle Mariners signed veteran infielder Donovan Solano to a one-year contract on Monday. According to a published report, Solano will make $3.5 million this season. The top-flight utility player can play all four infield spots as well as left field. The Mariners will be the seventh team to employ Solano, who batted .286 with a career-high eight homers to go with 35 RBIs in 96 games with the San Diego Padres in 2024. Solano, 37, has a .279 career average with 40 homers and 279 RBIs in 916 games with the Miami Marlins (2012-15), New York Yankees (2016), San Francisco Giants (2019-21), Cincinnati Reds (2022), Minnesota Twins (2023) and Padres. The Boston Red Sox have already added some starting pitching this offseason, trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval, but they should be looking to add more. On Thursday morning, MLB insider Jon Morosi linked the Red Sox to Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Sandy Alcantara in a trade, and with Boston's willingness to move first baseman Triston Casas, a potential deal made sense.
