Entering the offseason, the Washington Nationals had a projected salary arbitration bill of $26.9 million, per MLB Trade Rumors. Entering the new year, the Nationals have a projected salary arbitration bill of $25.3 million. The Nationals subtracted three players from that bill at the non-tender deadline. Opting not to tender a deal to closer Kyle Finnegan, who was due a projected $8.6 million, was the most curious.

The free agent market is starting to heat up once again. A few of the bigger moves that have happened were the Boston Red Sox signing Walker Buehler, the New York Mets re-signing Sean Manaea, and the Texas Rangers signing Joc Pederson among other moves. There still are a lot of players out there in free agency who can help teams in 2025, including players with ties to the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis likely isn't going to make any flashy signings themselves, but some former members of the organization are available and will land deals.

The last few years have been incredibly difficult for the Washington Nationals, as they have been mired in a rebuild following their World Series victory in 2019. It is hard to believe, but things could have actually been worse over the last few campaigns had the team made the decision to retain third baseman Anthony Rendon when he entered free agency following the championship.

The Seattle Mariners have had an uncharacteristically quiet offseason. While the Mariners have stood pat, they've watched an influx of first base transactions from Dec. 20-21 that took Paul Goldschmidt, Josh Naylor, Carlos Santana and Christian Walker off the board for them. Whether it's due to payroll restrictions, steep trade proposals, waiting for some other pieces to fall into place or some combination of the three, Seattle is still looking for a first baseman, second baseman or third baseman more than two months deep in the offseason.

For the second straight Major League Baseball offseason, a norm-shattering contract has been the talk of the winter, with Juan Soto agreeing with the New York Mets on a $765 million, 15-year deal that's the richest in baseball history. It comes almost exactly one year after the Los Angeles Dodgers forked out a princely sum of $700 million on a 10-year, heavily deferred deal for two-way Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. The way it's going, a contract approaching $1 billion doesn't seem out of the question.
