The Atlanta Braves haven't yet made their signature offseason trade, and that should be very intimidating to 29 other Major League Baseball fan bases. Two years ago, it was All-Star catcher Sean Murphy. Last year, it was Cy Young winner Chris Sale. The Braves have proven adept at pulling a blockbuster trade out of left field and making it pay off handsomely that very same year.

With pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training in just a couple weeks, there's still plenty left to sort out in the MLB offseason — and the San Diego Padres are at the center of a lot of it. One of the reasons for what The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal calls a “clogged market” is that there are a lot of trade chips still on the board. The Padres were already reportedly discussing trading Dylan Cease. Now, Michael King appears to be a potential trade chip as well, according to Rosenthal.

The San Diego Padres have had to watch stars either leave town as free agents or opt to sign elsewhere recently. The latest name to be linked to the Padres is right-hander Spencer Turnbull, who was once the Detroit Tigers' sixth-ranked prospect in 2016. Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors connected the veteran starter to San Diego when he predicted the Friars to land him in free agency on a one-year, $7 million deal. Turnbull has made an impressive recovery after missing part of 2021 and all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery.

Seidler passed away in November 2023 and since then, the team has been feeling the pressure to trim payroll where it can but still honor the memory and legacy of their beloved owner. The organization has been thrown into turmoil rather than executing the Padres' original plan. Instead of building a roster designed for postseason success, players are opting to sign elsewhere, pointing to instability in the front office as a key factor in their decision.

The San Diego Padres have been awfully quiet this offseason, having not made any major roster moves of any kind. The Dodgers have obviously been active, and so too have the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants.
