If the early league-wide returns offer evidence that it’s only going to take 84 wins or so, as it did last year, to reach the postseason, there are plenty of reasons to believe the Mets should be able to stay in the Wild Card hunt.

Dylan Cease struck out 12 and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter, and the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Wednesday. Cease went seven innings in a triumphant return to Chicago after the White Sox dealt him to San Diego in March.

San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish helped lead the Padres to a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday in his second game back from the 15-day injured list. Darvish landed on the IL in mid-April due to neck tightness. While going up against his former team Monday, Darvish pitched his second consecutive shutout performance. Despite putting in another strong outing, Darvish is setting a goal for where he wants to improve in his next start — to get closer to throwing 100 pitches in a start.

Michael Busch homered to lead off the ninth inning, lifting the host Chicago Cubs to a walk-off, 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Busch deposited a first-pitch fastball from Enyel De Los Santos (1-2) over the wall in right-center field. The homer was Busch's seventh of the season and first since he went deep in five straight games from April 10-15. The blast made a winner out of Hector Neris (2-0), who overcame a single and a walk to record a scoreless top of the ninth.
