Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox still need a leverage arm and another talented reliever just came off the free agent market. The rich got richer. The Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly struck a deal with veteran reliever Kirby Yates on a one-year deal for $13 million, per ESPN's Jeff Passan and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand . Yates together an exceptional season with the Texas Rangers in 2024 to the tune of a 1.17 ERA and struck out 12.4 batters per nine innings for his second-career All-Star selection. The Red Sox still seek another backend reliever to join leverage arms Liam Hendriks, Justin Slaten and Aroldis Chapman along with Garrett Whitlock as a multi-inning option. Three-time World Series champion Jon Lester is a Boston Red Sox legend, but that didn't happen overnight. Lester underwent a trial-and-error process before the left-hander was viewed as the top-of-the-rotation ace that earned Fenway Park's respect. In 2006, Lester debuted for the Red Sox and a year later, he became a World Series champion for the first time. Fast forward to 2013 and Lester was the alpha dog in Boston's rotation, posting a 1.65 postseason ERA before the Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the Fall Classic.

Liam Hendriks enters the 2025 season healthy as a prime candidate to be the closer for the Boston Red Sox. Hendriks shined in that role during previous stops with the then-Oakland Athletics and the Chicago White Sox. Now, it's time for him to restore those abilities and push the reshaped Red Sox bullpen to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. “It's fantastic,” Hendriks told NESN's Tom Caron on the “310 To Left” podcast.

Boston Red Sox newcomer Carlos Narváez grew up in Venezuela keeping a keen eye on the catching position. Carlos Narváez was also a big fan of catching greats Iván Rodríguez, Yadier Molina and Salvador Pérez. There was one more catcher on Narváez's list whom he idolized and it was none other than Red Sox legend Jason Varitek.

It has been a long offseason full of rumors for the Boston Red Sox. While this is the case, the Red Sox are in a better place than they were at the end of the 2024 season. Whether the Red Sox can sign Alex Bregman or not, Boston should be better in 2025. The Red Sox won 81 games in 2024 and have added Walker Buehler, Garrett Crochet, Aroldis Chapman, and Patrick Sandoval.

The Boston Red Sox still need a right-handed bat and a leverage reliever to fully fill out needs with less than a month to go before spring training. If the Red Sox don't love the remaining arms available down that avenue, they could get creative to explore the trade market instead. The Chicago Cubs chose that route over the weekend when they dealt for Houston Astros closer Ryan Pressly. Boston could at least turn over a few stones and see if a trade would be more beneficial.

Outfielder Roman Anthony, baseball's No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America and the MLB Pipeline, was among nine non-roster invitees to spring training, the Boston Red Sox announced Tuesday. Anthony, 20, is a left-handed hitter who was named Double-A Portland's team MVP in 2024 after hitting 15 home runs and 38 extra-base hits. A second-round selection in 2022, this will be the Florida native's first spring training camp. At Fenway Fest in Boston earlier this month, in speaking during his media availability, Anthony said he grew up watching Christian Yelich, who started with the Miami Marlins before moving on to the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Milwaukee Brewers should be back in the playoffs once again in 2025. Milwaukee is loaded with exciting talent and should be considered the favorites in the National League Central. The Chicago Cubs have tried to bridge the gap between the two division rivals, but the Brewers still are a better overall team on paper. The Brewers still could use a boost in the bullpen, though, after trading Devin Williams away.

Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony has had to relinquish his spot atop MLB prospects lists to Roki Sasaki, whom the Los Angeles Dodgers just signed out of the Japan Pacific League. Law does not see Sasaki as a prospect, since he pitched the last five seasons professionally in the JPPL for the Chiba Lotte Mariners.

With just about two weeks to go before spring training gets underway in Fort Myers, the Red Sox are closing in on making a veteran addition to their list of non-roster camp invitees. Boston is putting the finishing touches on a minor league contract with veteran infielder Abraham Toro, a source confirmed Tuesday. Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extra Base first reported an agreement, with Toro himself confirming on his Instagram story. Toro, a 28-year-old Canada native, has appeared in 365 big league games with four teams (Houston, Seattle, Milwaukee and Oakland) since debuting in 2019.

Ceddanne Rafaela showed flashes of excellence as a rookie in 2024, but the dynamic Boston Red Sox youngster may have just been scratching the surface. The Athletic's Jim Bowden reached out to all 30 MLB clubs and their internal evaluators, asking which of their players had the best chance to break out in Spring Training. Rafaela hit .246 with a .664 OPS last season, neither of which look particularly impressive on the surface. Per Bowden, Rafaela is likely to be Boston's "long-term answer" in center as long as he remains capable on offense.

Time for one more Boston Red Sox blockbuster trade this winter? It's been a busy offseason for Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow on the trade front, headlined by the December swap with the Chicago White Sox that brought All-Star starting pitcher Garrett Crochet to Boston. In a recent article, MassLive's Chris Cotillo proposed St. Louis Cardinals two-time All-Star Ryan Helsley as a realistic target for Boston to acquire, as he enters his final year of team control with an $8.2 million salary his team may want to shed.
