Detroit Tigers

The St. Louis Cardinals brass has made it clear all offseason long that their goal is to get younger entering the 2025 season, as they believe as though their veteran core has plateaued and that a soft reset is in order to get the proud franchise back to its usual level. To that end, the Cardinals have been making their veteran players available on the trade market — including two starting pitchers in Erick Fedde and Steven Matz. While Fedde and Matz are far from the flashiest starting pitchers to add to rotation, they should still command some interest on the trade market as veterans that won't cost much in terms of salary as well as prospect capital.

The Detroit Tigers have seen immediate results from their first round pick a couple of years ago and couldn't be happier about it. MLB prospect analysts Jonathan Mayo and Sam Dykstra recently looked through each MLB team's farm system for one stat that stood out. For the Tigers, it has been the plate discipline of infielder Kevin McGonigle. Having McGonigle develop in the middle of the infield would be a saving grace for this struggling Detroit offense.

The Detroit Tigers will be seeing a familiar face in at least a few series next season. Former Tigers third baseman and free agent Gio Urshela agreed to terms on a deal this week with the soon-to-be Las Vegas Athletics as first reported by Martín Gallegos of MLB.com. Gallegos says the contract will be a one-year agreement, meaning likely that it is not a minor league deal. Urshela will have a chance to be the team's starting third baseman entering a clubhouse that is not exactly ripe with talent at the position.

"A couple of years ago, I was out for a ginger ale with my boss, Jeff Byle, who is a longtime pal and he graciously told me at the time, "You tell us when you want to be done. "It was a wistful getting through the end of the Tigers season and now that the Red Wings season is ongoing, it just feels like it's time to share the decision." Keating has been a face of Detroit sports in both the NHL and MLB for decades, winning more than a dozen emmys during his time with FOX Sports Detroit and later Bally Sports.

As we approach the holidays and turn over into a new year, the Chicago White Sox have little-to-no hope of fielding a watchable team in 2025. The Los Angeles Dodgers have parted ways with Andre Lipcius, who cleared waivers and was officially released on Monday, according to the team's transaction log. Lipcius is now a free agent and can sign with any team. The Dodgers initially acquired Lipcius from the Detroit Tigers in March, trading cash considerations to bolster their infield depth but instead of making an impact in the big leagues, he spent the entire 2024 season in Triple-A. In Oklahoma City, he posted a .271/.351/.458 slash line with 26 doubles, two triples, 25 home runs, and 89 RBIs across 636 plate appearances over 140 games.

The Detroit Tigers have been fairly quiet in the offseason thus far, but this is a team that can still make a couple of moves to help improve their chances to contend next season. In 2024, the Tigers were able to shock the league with one of the best second halves of a season in recent memory. While there were a lot of things to like about Detroit last season, there were some areas where they could use some upgrades. Currently, adding a top-end starter, a first baseman, third baseman, and a hitter that could be placed in the middle of the order are the main needs.

Alex Cobb is only a year removed from an All-Star season with the San Francisco Giants, but the new Detroit Tigers pitcher admits that he considered retirement. 2024 was a rough year for Cobb, who threw a grand total of 16.1 total innings for the Cleveland Guardians as he battled shoulder, back and hip injuries. “Honestly, that was heavy on my mind after my last start,” Cobb told the Detroit Free Press. The Tigers won the biding, signing him to a one-year deal that includes additional million-dollar-bonuses if Cobb hits 140 and 150 innings.
