The Kansas City Royals lucked out when trading with the Athletics at last season's deadline. In former Athletics reliever Lucas Erceg, the Royals acquired the breakout star who would become their closer for the entire stretch run. After putting up a 2.88 ERA/1.17 FIP in 23 outings in Kansas City, Erceg looks to have the inside track on locking up his closer job permanently in 2025. The A's have since moved to Sacramento for the next three seasons, and have spent the most money in franchise history for a single offseason, in large part to avoid a potential grievance from the owners that would threaten their revenue-sharing status.

Not all free-agent signings work out, even when the player in question has more World Series rings than anyone else in the sport this decade. Last winter, the Kansas City Royals added veteran left-hander Will Smith to their bullpen, after he had won three World Series in a row with three different teams. At age 35, Smith probably doesn't have too many seasons left in Major League Baseball. In a recent article, FanSided's Rachael Millanta predicted that Smith would rejoin the Atlanta Braves, with whom he won his first World Series ring in 2021.

As the Kansas City Royals prepare to enter the 2025 season, something is still amiss with their roster construction. Despite the presence of a superstar in Bobby Witt Jr. and a strong top of the rotation, the Royals aren't considered much of a threat to challenge for the American League pennant. With MJ Melendez, Kyle Isbel, and Hunter Renfroe currently projecting as the starters, the Royals may have no outfielder with a guaranteed job all season.

After a disappointing campaign in 2024, the Texas Rangers are eagerly awaiting getting back on the field in 2025. Currently, Texas has what appears to be a strong starting rotation on paper with a nice mix of veterans and young starters. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report recently spoke about Kirby Yates being a perfect player to fill a void in the Kansas City Royals' bullpen.

The Kansas City Royals have made a few key moves this offseason to bolster their chances of returning to the postseason in 2025. Last summer, they drafted two-way player Jac Caglianone, and he is currently their top ranked prospect since being selected. The Kansas City Royals may or may not be done shopping for major league free agents this winter. With their payroll already virtually the same as last season's, the Royals wouldn't seem to have much wiggle room left in the budget for another star. Would a low-cost free agent help or hurt the situation? It's always a tough call to make for a big-league front office, but perhaps it would give the Royals more confidence to make the move if the player they were acquiring had a track record of success in their organization.

The Kansas City Royals might say they're happy with the staring rotation as it currently stands, but they'd still be wise to keep pursuing upgrades. It's perfectly fine to be satisfied with the top three--Seth Lugo, Cole Ragans, and Michael Wacha are all coming off tremendous seasons. After trading Brady Singer, who made 32 starts last season, the Royals are counting on Kris Bubic and Michael Lorenzen to shore up those final two spots, with some potential help from Kyle Wright and Alec Marsh.

The New York Yankees could be in the market for an infielder to play over their internal options. The St. Louis Cardinals have a young utility player they could be interested in, but a different American League team could get to him first. Brendan Donovan has filed for arbitration with the Cardinals, perhaps signaling an incoming trade. Donovan could take over for the Yankees at either second or third base.

The Kansas City Royals have made a few key moves this offseason. With their cross-state rivals St. Louis Cardinals rebuilding, Kansas City might be wise to give them a call about closer Ryan Helsley. Helsley is entering the final year of his contract with St. Louis, and they have been unable to trim their payroll as a result of Nolan Arenado not being traded.

The 2024 season was a huge step in the right direction for the Royals, who won 30 more games in the regular season than in 2023, then won their first playoff series since 2015 over the Baltimore Orioles. The Royals have a transcendent offensive player in Bobby Witt Jr. and a leader with a World Series ring in Salvador Perez.

The Kansas City Royals liked what they saw from Michael Lorenzen down the stretch last season, when they went from a 106-loss laughingstock to a surprising playoff team thanks in part to their deadline acquisition from Texas. Lorenzen liked what he saw in Kansas City, too. The Royals and the right-hander finalized their $7 million, one-year deal Wednesday, putting him squarely in the mix for a spot in the starting rotation.
